Glistening Smiles
By Lana Johnson, Los Angeles Times
Everyone deserves to experience the highest level of dentistry in a comfortable, relaxing environment. And everyone deserves a beautiful, white smile that starts with a healthy mouth and gums as its foundation. Now you can experience this and more for yourself at the Newport Dental Spa in Newport Beach. When you meet Dr. Banafsheh Shoushtari, you are warmed by her calm, friendly demeanor, which belies her impressive credentials. She received her DMD and postdoctoral AEGD certificates from the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine, where she also completed her residency. She is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, and has undergone extensive continuing education in aesthetic & restorative dentistry, including cosmetic dentistry training at the world-renowned Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental studies.
And welcome you, Dr. Shoushtari graciously does, into a beautiful spa-like setting where you receive personalized, unhurried attention. After practicing in Boston and Silicon Valley, she relocated to Newport Beach two years ago to build her dream practice, which was five years in the planning. Dr. Shoushtari designed the interior of Newport Dental Spa herself as if it were her home: tall rich mahogany doors, a neutral soothing color palette and beautiful, private customized rooms, yield to state-of-the-art equipment (much of which is recessed behind sleek cabinetry).
“We provide world-class dentistry from full mouth reconstruction to teeth whitening no matter what the procedure, I want to touch a person’s soul,” Dr. Shoushtari said. “I want our guests to realize the importance in getting healthy today, not five years from now and I do this by healing the whole mouth. It’s extremely rewarding to help a patient move away from a diseased mouth [because many times they take care of one immediate problem and disregard the importance of their overall dental health] to a confident lifestyle.
“I want to make every one of our guests experience an enjoyable visit,” she continued. “Once I assist them in getting their mouths healthy, it motivates them to keep up the regimen. They gain self confidence and love to smile to show off their beautiful teeth. It’s truly transforming.”
All dental work, no matter how elementary or extremely detailed is customized. State-of-the-art procedures combine with Dr. Shoushtari’s passion for dentistry in spa-like customized rooms. Digital X-rays are analyzed, along with colorizing the radiograph of the tooth, for precision diagnostics. If anesthetizing the tooth is needed, the CompuDent system is used, which employs a Wand that resembles a pen, not a syringe. It’s painless, comfortable and non-threatening. And for dental implants, a flap-less [no incision] surgery occurs (based on a diagnostic CT scan). To ensure the mouth is re-created to achieve a beautiful “Golden Proportion” smile, Dr. Shoushtari deploys the latest conservative cosmetic techniques and materials, along with Invisalign for straightening teeth without braces. Preventative dentistry is emphasized heavily at Newport Dental Spa utilizing many measures such as the harmless laser scanning systems to detect hidden decay. In fact, each guest room is customized to your tastes from DVD selections to digital TV you will always experience the personal touch. The Oasis Room has special calming elements, while the VIP Cosmetic Suite turns into a photo studio to capture that perfect smile behind the lens after your procedure. And all dental records are completely digital, streamlining the charting process as well as diagnostics.
“We like to provide complimentary relaxing treatments such as a hand paraffin, while our guests are treated,” Dr. Shoushtari said. “It contributes to their overall well being while they’re experiencing the finest dental services. It’s my dream to make this the best dental experience possible for youngsters and adults alike.”

Dr. Banafsheh Shoushtari, DMD,FAGD sits in her tastefully appointed office at Newport Dental Spa and talks about her love of dentistry, a profession her father initially was not keen on her pursuing. “He hoped I would go to medical school,” says Dr. Shoushtari. In fact, that was her plan until she did a summer internship in a dental clinic. “That’s when I knew I wanted to work with my hands.” Since childhood, both her interests in health and the arts have been constants. At Newport Dental Spa, Dr. Shoushtari combines both.
“A beautiful smile must telegraph good dental health,” says Dr. Shoushtari. The start of a beautiful smile often begins with restoring dental health which in turn improves general health. The health of the gums and teeth can impact immune and cardiovascular function. Strains of bacteria common in tooth plaque are also found in the fatty deposits responsible for clogging arteries. Treating gum disease is essential; the connection to bacterial endocarditis is well documented in the literature. She often works with cardiologists and talks about a prominent one who calls her oral health assessment and treatments the ‘Rolls
